Quoting 9V-SPJ (Thread starter): A nice tribute by SIA to the B747....http://www.siajourneys.com/

Nice. My first 747 flight was with SQ, long time ago.
Quoting dennys (Reply 1):
Yes quite right , but the worst tribute is that they buy too many 777s and leave the 748-8i behind their choice !
I absolutely agree. A soulless efficient plane (partly) replacing a legend. Shame on SQ!

You may not like the looks of A380, but different from all other planes she is! No doubt.
If you find all those twins boring, you should celebrate the existence of another 4-holer with a bright long future ahead of her.
If you find everything else boring APART from B747; then you may not like where aviation is going!
For me, the more variety the better!
Hoping for some sort of Embraer 3 holer or something; bring it on!

Its not the looks, i find the onboard experience nothing special in my book I have fown on QF both Y&J SQ Y , yes it is quiet yes it is smooth but apart from that ?? cant sleep in a window in Y walls are curved and to far away from seats .In J of QF i do not want to hear conversation from across the aisle, we dont all watch IFE for 24hrs from SYD to LHR, engine and airframe noise do not bother me. the 77W is noisy at the back . the 330 is quiet compared to it , i Just find twins boring. yes my username is mal787, but when i signed on to Anet after a a big gap year my original mal747 was not available for some reason

A 3 holer , bring it on, my first was on an AN 727 and last on an AY MD11 loved them both

Quoting na (Reply 5): The A380 is at least the most comfy and economical thing flying.
Your average pax has no care about economics as the 380 has not dropped fares like the 747 did back in the 70's , its all hype that i avoid now , been there done that lets move on .

To more 777 and 330? or 787? or 350? where is it to, you want to "move on"?
I'm not sure if you'll agree with me, but after travelling so much on their 777s, I think the SQ777 has left a special place just as similar to the 747. Of course, it wasn't that much a engineering feat but I really like the SQ777s. I also wish they would purchase the 747-8i
Somehow, everything just feels different with the 380.

I first saw the 747 at IAD, when Mrs. Johnson (wife of President) christened it. I was working at DCA and several of us drove out to see it. Dulles was in the middle of absolute nowhere. Nothing but tress and farmland from the Beltway to the airport. When we came off the access road around a slight curve, we could see the tail already. It was late a night and nobody was around. They had parked her next to a 707 and Ford Tri-motor. What a sight I'll never forget. I believe this was/is the Queen of the Skies. The next is the Concord. I'm sorry the A-380 is not a pretty picture. It reminds me of cruise ships that look like large container ships. That is what they are anyway, since the rooms are made on shore and attached like containers. I would go out of my way to fly the 747......could care less about the A-380.

I may love the B744, and I am going out of my way to visit 9V-SPQ in a few hours time at the Singapore Airshow, but I also love the A380 and just about anything which reminds me of the marvel of flying.
It's huaiwei...not huawei. I have nothing to do with the PRC! :)

Very good point. I don't really 'get' cruises - just like I don't get "vegas". Now - give me the Alaska inland ferry system -that is a cruise.
This got me to thinking - what planes have I ridden/flown and how do I fee about them. Completely personal and biased (opinion). Based on experiences and how I 'feel' headed to the airport.
I loved the 727. Loved it loved it loved it. Mostly Alaska. Miss it.
I love the 747.
I like the 777 alot (not quite "love it" - but happy when I board)
I'm comfy on the 737
767 - Just a plane.
757 - Like it - love it when the pilots push it.
I loved the L1011.
DC10/MD11 - Just a plane
Beaver - Gotta love it (flying or riding). Nothing like hand pumped flaps and docking ropes trailing from the wing. And the sound of that radial!
152- Fond of it - had some good times. Solo plane.
Tomahawk - hated it and was scared of it (watch the tail wag in a spin).
Arrow - yuck. Can I have some flaps please?
182 - my favorite GA I flew regularly
172 - pucker factor - need more power please (recall - my base elevation is 5000')
Turbo 206 - watch this baby climb - but the 152 was darn near faster.
A320 - just a plane. Dunno why.
A340 - hated it - but probably not fair because the only 340 I've flown was LH TALT- and my butt and LH's coach seats don't agree - so it has always been a miserable trip.
A330 - never had the chance - I don't think. Or - if I did, I was not impressed (just a plane) because I don't remember it.
A380 - never had the chance - probably never will since I don't fly the routes where it makes sense any more (Ditto 747)
MDxx - just a plane.
Bombardier - Don't they make snowmobiles . Actually - I really like the small private feel of a CJ
Embraer - Like the EJ's. C-series - just a plane (again).
Hands down winner - Convair 580 - multiple Denver-Aspen flights. So cool.
Again - purely subjective opinion - so please don't tell me I'm wrong. You can have a completely different opinion - and you are NOT wrong.

Nice tribute... now I seem to remember some not so nice comments about the 747 when the first A380 came to SQ. Comments as to how the 747 was old technology and the A380 was the future.
In fact I distinctly remember a picture with two people, either both from SQ or one from SQ and another one from Airbus (not sure) smiling as they cut a model of a 747 in half, marking the death of it as the A380 came along. I couldn't believe they did that. In fact it was in such low taste that they removed the picture. Been searching for it for a long time and never found it again. But I'm sure of what I saw. Can anyone here back me up on that? Does anyone remember? Somebody must have seen it. It was during the first A380 arrival celebrations.

What did you expect? It is after all what the airline makes from it.
If it's just plain Y-class you fly, that is what you get.....a metal tube filled with seats. No frills or thrills...........
How would B748-i be any different?
I am glad we'll still see 4-holers for a looong time to come, and I thought you would appreciate that.....as somebody that considers twins boring.

That is really interesting!!! I think that it's very much possible about this and will see soon for maybe some orders!!! But the B744F of SQ are in good condition!! Could take a some more time for a possible replacement!!! You have the patience?

Say what you want about the 747 love it or not I for one LOVE it ... if it wasnt for this aircraft alot of airline would exist or prosper they way they have to name a few Singapour , Malayasia, Garouda, Quantas etc etc and they are more.... this baby revolutionized air travel, and i for one dont think anything can take that crown away from her. I has been working on her and flying her for 15 yrs plus and to me its better than a Timex she takes a licking and keeps on trucking or flying as u wish

The 747 will always being be fav plane. To be quite honest everytime I see this plane I just fall in-love with it all over again just I did the first time I boarded on on KL692 A/C reg # PH-BFN. And I chose KL692 as my user name as a tribute to B747. And April 6 will be very sad day to see another 747 end it service. " It was a plane that was truly ahead of it time" and I really hope that the 748 will contiune to carry it's name.

NO other aircraft, twin or quad, looks quite like a heavily-loaded 744 at rotation. There is a perfect balance of grace and power right at that moment.
There is something about the 744 that no other plane has. It's not just the hump, but something in the wings and in the majestic way she flies. I'll miss her when she's gone.

Very nice tribute to the Queen of the skies at one of the world's favorite airlines!
I saw one at JFK a few weeks ago and I knew that it would be the last time in my live I would ever see one.
Is SQ flying its final flight on Apr 6th from SIN to HKG and back? I thought SQ retired the type already in January. I assume that after that date, Apr 6th, Singapore will continue to fly the 747 but only as freighter. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

The SQ B744s will continue to operate to Melbourne until March 25. Their commemorative and final B744 flight to HKG will follow on April 6. Not sure if the jumbos will be utilized between these two dates.

Although the flights SQ747 (SIN-HKG) and SQ748 (HKG-SIN) are operated on a weekday ... it is a public holiday in various countries - Good Friday.
The last three Boeing 747s in SIA fleet now - 9V-SPJ (still in the old colours), 9V-SPP (in Star Alliance livery) and 9V-SPQ (which is the aircraft designated for the special tribute flight) have all been sold to Transaero Airlines and these will not be operating any flights between March 25 (when the last B744 MEL-SIN flights is operated) and April 6.
