The night stopping B763 on Saturday, the AC868 was turned around and departed to Toronto as the delayed AC859 after 1030pm , getting back to Canada very late / early and leaving no aircraft for the early morning departure. Thought nothing of it until I saw the same thing happen tonight alongwith the AC857 delayed about ten hours and operated by a B777-200LR. This arrived as the AC856 so did the same crew just get 12 hours sleep and fly her back? Are Air Canada an aircraft down somwehere?

Thanks

I know AC are down a few *pilots*, as some senior T7and 763 captains have opted for retirement in order to crystallize their pensions. This may affect ops this summer if no remedial action is taken.

They're hiring by the looks of it. A few people I know are going to AC in the coming months. So I see people moving up in the ranks over the next few months.

They'll have to hire what with all the 777s they seem to be ordering. It's just they';re losing experience, which today's event showed is really important.

I'm confused. Because Air Canada is an aircraft down, is this causing some passengers to be stranded, or have they just been delayed until a new aircraft is flown in? I guess they don't have a spare 77L at YYZ that they can ferry to LHR to end this series of delays (or just fly to LHR as a revenue flight)?

Sounds like they're minimum resting the crew to try and maintain as much as the schedule as possible. Instead of the usual 24-30 hrs layover they are getting the minimum legally required ( probably @ 8 hrs rest plus travel time)

As a practice it's clearly not ideal, but it does keep things moving for a few days. Any longer and the inevitable cancellations begin....

So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

I think they're also only using 3 pilots on this route, whereas many other operators would use 4.

A crew of 4 for LHR-YYZ?! I can't speak for Toronto, but I know BA do LHR-East Coast US on 2 pilots.

Was actually thinking of 4 pilots for YVR-SYD, maybe also YYZ-TLV. Should have been more clear.
